What milestones should your child have reached at 12 to 14 months?

What milestones should your child have reached at 12 to 14 months? Source: Bounty

Watching your child develop can be equal parts amazing and nerve-racking. Each new milestone is an absolute joy but it can be tough wondering if he or she is developing at a normal rate.

While every child is different, here are a few milestones that are typically reached by 12-14 months:

Cruising –

Cruising is the transitional period between crawling and walking. By one year, babies are usually able to pull themselves to a standing position and shuffle/walk with the aid of furniture or an adult’s hand. While cruising looks pretty close to full-fledged walking, babies may stay in this stage for some time before being able to walk with no assistance at all.

Frustration and Aggression –

It’s a big world out there and by 12-14 months, babies are trying to learn it all. This can lead to frustration, which in turn leads to aggression. At this age, toddlers can have temper tantrums and show signs of defiance. This lust for independence and control can manifest itself in assertiveness and stubbornness. With these powerful emotions and your child’s newfound mobility, baby-proofing around this age is essential.

Speaking and Gesturing –

While you’re still a long way from full conversations with your child, by 12-14 months, babies can usually say at least a few words such as “no,” “mommy,” or “daddy.” Additionally, children at this age can often make gestures such as waving goodbye or pointing at objects. Some children are also able to nod or shake their head to answer yes-no questions.

As mentioned earlier, every child is different. These developmental milestones are not gospel, just examples of common benchmarks shared among the majority of the population. If you’re concerned about your child’s development, consult a doctor.
